Having braces on your teeth or child’s teeth is not something that gets taken off in a matter of weeks or months. The timeframe in which someone needs to have their braces on can change depending on the state of someone’s teeth, but on average, a person will have braces for about two years.

Most people have a negative attitude towards braces. Lecanto teenagers and children especially do not like the idea of having braces on their teeth, and so many of them will ask their dental or orthodontic professional if there is any way that they can get their braces off sooner.

In most cases, there is not really too much that an individual can do that would make them take their braces off sooner, however there are some negative actions that a person can neglect which would actually prolong the need to have braces on their teeth

Not Taking Care of Your Braces

While braces and the brackets in a patient’s mouth are made out of metal, they are not indestructible. It is important for a person to regularly care for their braces to prevent them from breaking or getting damaged.

This is more than simply brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, which is important as well, but there are other issues. When it comes to taking care of braces, Lecanto residents should know that they will have to avoid specific types of food that can cause issues with this dental hardware.

The two most notorious two types of food that a person should avoid, for example, are really crunchy foods, and sticky foods like gum. Crunchy food can easily break a wire or bracket if it is hard enough, and gum can easily disrupt or pull out dental work that it sticks to.

Not Keeping Up Dental Work At Home

Most of the time when someone needs something done to their mouth or their braces, Lecanto residents would have to go to their orthodontist and have them do the work, but there are some actions that are up to the individuals to perform without the oversight of a professional.

One common issue where this can happen is dental bands that help correct overbites. A patient will have to wear these bands to slowly fix this jaw alignment issue, but if a person doesn’t use them, there is a good chance they are going to have their braces on longer than the average person.

This is also true after someone has their braces off, and they refuse to use their dental routers, but brackets are off by then, so it doesn’t necessarily affect the timeframe of having braces on.
